'Twas the Weekend I Poisoned My Family

Wednesday is my grocery day. It's the day the sales start. It's one of my days off. It works for us. This past Wednesday as I was gathering all the goods on my list, I decided to forgo the ground beef in an effort for better health. Instead, I picked up a package of ground turkey. Now, I felt a bit guilty about this because Love of My Life has made it VERY clear that he despises ground turkey. Even when somewhat disguised in spaghetti sauce. But I happen to love LOML and he has a little cholesterol issue. And I gained 5 pounds this past month. (Yes I know I'm carrying a child, but I also want to provide food of good nutritional value for her too). Bottom line, ground beef ain't good for any of us.

And so we had a rather unsatisfying meal of ground turkey spaghetti and spinach salad Friday night around 6:00. Little One was then bathed, put to bed, and we started a movie. And then, we tuned into the 10 o'clock news. That's when all hell broke loose. SALMONELLA. GROUND TURKEY RECALL. IF PURCHASED AT KROGER. BETWEEN THESE SPECIFIC DATES. WITH THIS SPECIFIC LABEL. Oh, Lord have mercy. I've poisoned my family. With a meal none of us even liked.

A quick google search and one sobbing phone call to a dear friend later (who happens to be a nurse practitioner...I don't make many 10:30 pm phone calls), we prepared for the worst. All I could think about was the food poisoning incident of '09 in which LOML and I fought for our lives, me a whopping 8 months preggers. We contracted the virus from a dish served at a baby shower in my honor. Ugh. LOML and I can deal with it again (in my worst nightmares), but Little One? Oh heavens. I calmed down, went to bed, and when we awoke and realized we had survived, I was able to breathe a little easier. We're still salmonella poisoning symptom free around here, thank the Lord. THANK THE LORD.

I made turkey burgers the other night for dinner, and Jacob came home asking if I'd heard about the turkey recall. After a little research and a decision that our ground turkey wasn't recalled, we just laughed and said we'd discuss it over dinner. Glad y'all escaped the 'nella!
