yesterday, my fourth graders were reading about our state's influence on music. from country to blues and rock and roll, it was a highly enjoyable lesson (this coming from a person who detests learning history). i found it quite interesting that one of my students claimed to have attended an elvis concert, adding the disclaimer that elvis "was shot, only like 5 years ago." hmmm, he is a bit confused. it also amuses me that dolly parton is actually billy ray cyrus' mom and he is miley cyrus' dad...hello? HANNAH MONTANNA'S GRANDMOTHER. again, this is highly entertaining. his presentation was actually quite believable. who cares that he was wrong on four different counts? he was so certain of himself that i almost forgot that elvis died of an overdose 6 years before i was born, that dolly parton doesn't have any children, and that there is no way that a 9 year old boy saw elvis in concert. he really had me going there for a minute!
along the same lines, outside my classroom door are fourth grade's book report posters. this greeted me this morning as i unlocked my classroom door:

i find the illustration (or illustrator) a
bit inappropriate. at least she did her own work, but if i were that girl's mom, mr. fuzzy polar bear wouldn't have made the final draft after seeing the sketches.
