I'm still learning. This is duck season #5 of my being the wife of my hunter. Truly, the biggest source of conflict in our marriage is hunting...the land lease, the shells, the gas to get there, the Gatorade stops, the duck call practices, the gear, the dirt on the truck that leads to cleaning the truck that takes him away even more, the
time away from home, the
time away from Little One, the
time away from me. Did I mention the
time that's spent on hunting and her details?

I'm still learning. That "I'll be home around 11" really means more like 12:30 (except this weekend, he stuck to his word...and earned some brownie points). That the number of victims is not indicative of a good hunt. That you might have a million friends with 4-wheelers available for your use, but it's really important to have your own. That when the alarm goes off at 3:45, I'll be the one turning it off and praying that Little One didn't hear it or sense her daddy's excitement.

I'm still learning. We don't typically eat the meat that is hunted and killed. LOML donates it to "Hunters for the Hungry" so it's not just wasted. However, I've been doing a
Tim Keller Bible study on Genesis. It's given me a little perspective on God's intention for man's relationship with animals. And I shared this with LOML. He was quite receptive and for only the second time of our marriage, brought home his kill. He killed it, he cleaned it, and I cooked it.
Y'all, I COOKED IT. And then we ate it. And it was good.
I'm still learning to embrace the duck.

YOU GO GIRL!!!!
You're doing better than I am... HUGE conflict in the Garrett household this weekend over the stupid ducks. Guess I need to learn from you. I do, however, love to eat it. We do ours with a slice of jalapeno, wrapped in bacon, and grilled. Yum! You'll have to share how you cooked yours! We should get together for lunch sometime soon and commiserate about ducks.
Definitely the biggest source of conflict in the McKinnon household! Take strength in knowing you aren't alone :) Love your attitude!
This post sure hits home!! Troy just got back from a 2 week hunting trip to Illinois!! I was about to go crazy!
You have to allow your man to have man time. You have a fabulous husband who is there for you and your daughter. Embrace his love for something that makes him an individual. I WISH my man would hunt. We live in Wyoming now, so it's very easy to fill up a freezer of meat for sustain us for the winter.
Definitely get him to bring home the game. I would love to hear of the different ways to use duck meat. (I love duck)
Girl - I hear everything you are sayin' in this post. Hunting - the greatest source of marital tension. 3:45 am wake ups. I'm with ya. Adding a child into the mix of all this - whoa. We've learned A LOT and fought A LOT, but every year gets a little better. I give a little more, he gives a little more. We have learned and are still learning.
I grew up with hunters (dad and brother). They've cooked and experimented with all types of game. Duck is by far my favorite (wrapped in bacon and grilled) with a side of wild rice. I've made duck gumbo before which was not so great. Good for you for stepping into the realm of eating what your husband kills...its not an easy thing to warm up to. The cleaning process and all the feathers - yuck. I'd love to hear Tim K's thoughts on this subject!
Happy Duck season! :)
