Perceptions

I love the perceptions that my students have of the child growing inside me.

Earlier today, I had my fourth graders come to my desk one at a time for me to check over their work. Little Sally*, of African American descent, happened to notice the ultrasound picture on my desk.

Sally*: "Is that your baby?"
Me: (smiling) "Yes."
Sally*: (a look of terror) "Oh, she's black?!"

I could not contain my laughter. I am still laughing. I will probably still be laughing tomorrow.

Also today, one of my third graders asked why I didn't see her class yesterday. I told her I had been to the doctor (I actually had taken The Love of My Life to the doctor but it was easier to not explain all of that). She looked at me with wide eyes and asked, "Did they get the baby out?" Two words...Oh my.
