i just need to share what a special group of kids i teach (well, you already knew they were special). one of my third graders is a st. jude patient. surely you are familiar with st jude- it's a children's research hospital that is free of charge to its selected patients. read more here.
anyway, so one of my third graders is recovering from having a brain tumor 4 years ago. she is currently in remission. everything is going well for her except for her hair growth. she has hair, just very little. another one of my third graders has been growing her hair out forEVER. yesterday, she and the other child headed out to a salon to chop off her hair. they went together because her hair will be made into a wig for her classmate. is that not the sweetest sacrifice? it's only hair, i know...but it's hair in the third grade. your social life is just starting, your identity is just beginning to form. that precious girl loved her long locks- she'd always ask me to braid it or put it in a bun for her. and now she's sporting a darling new bob. i am so proud of her.
today has been one of those days where your children (students) teach you a smidge more than you teach them...
